Graduation Requirements and Planning

Planning for graduation can be daunting! Please know our counselors are willing to meet with students to create a plan that aligns to their post-high school goals.

EGRHS and State of Michigan Graduation Requirements

  1. Only approved courses will be accepted for graduation.  Coursework taken anywhere but at East Grand Rapids High School must be approved in advance.

  2. Students enrolling in summer school for credit must have prior approval from an East Grand Rapids High School counselor.

  3. A student may repeat a course that they have taken and passed. Although both grades will be recorded, only the higher grade will be used in computing the GPA (grade point average).

  4. Students lacking not more than one credit at graduation time will be permitted to participate in commencement exercises, provided they are enrolled in summer school for the necessary credit. The diploma will be withheld until all graduation requirements have been fulfilled.

  5. Recognizing that a small percentage of students may be unable to meet certain Michigan Merit Curriculum requirements, a personal curriculum can be developed.

GENERAL STATEMENT ABOUT HONORS COURSES:

Students who engage in honors courses often demonstrate a solid foundation in organization, time management, and communication skills. They are intrinsically motivated and enjoy the learning process. This includes spending additional time outside the classroom mastering concepts and connecting with teachers and classmates to enhance their understanding. Students are not often given credit for the completion of work; rather, they are assessed on their demonstrated understanding of the material.

Freshmen should carefully consider the number of honors courses they take so that they can balance their academic workload with time spent in athletics, clubs, and additional extracurricular activities.  We want each student to have a healthy and well-rounded high school experience.
