You wouldn’t know it to look at him, nor would you guess it based on his excellent grades, but Sam Greenway spent much of his senior year in pain he likens to “glass shards flowing through your veins.”

The recent East Grand Rapids High School graduate has sickle cell anemia, a disorder marked by misshapen, rigid red blood cells, which stick together and block the flow of oxygen to the rest of the body. This results in fatigue, inflammation, infection and extreme pain, which is the symptom Sam has struggled with the most.

Speed and Agility Training

Speed and Agility performance training is being made available to all East Grand Rapids High School students in grades 9-12 for the 2025-2026 school year.  Sessions are once a week, and one hour in duration.  These sessions are being facilitated through Thoroughbred Performance Training on-site at Memorial Field.  Students should dress in workout attire and bring cleats and/or running shoes for the sessions. Students should also bring their water bottles for hydration.

Dates and Times for these supplemental training sessions is below:

When the time came to choose an Eagle Scout project that would highlight his leadership skills and benefit future generations, Graham Schiefler turned his attention to his school community. 

Over the course of about 11 months, the East Grand Rapids High School junior organized, planned and oversaw the identification, marking and mapping of the trees at the middle school, replacing outdated wooden markers that were in disrepair.

East Grand Rapids High School celebrates the life lessons of kindness, inclusivity, and friendship representing the legacy of Jimmy Gerken through Kabookie Week, held each February. Kabookie Week includes school spirit days, an assembly, and a school dance, to commemorate Jimmy and promote togetherness.
